Be of Service
The National Volunteer Week theme for 2021, THE VALUE OF ONE, The POWER of MANY, reflects on the awe-inspiring acts of kindness by millions of individuals and the magic that happens when we work together towards a common purpose. This past year, we have seen people supporting family, friends, neighbours, and strangers. We stand alongside people standing up to systemic racism, and others sharing insights on how to create a more just and equitable society. We recognize the value of the caring and compassion that each one has shown another, and we recognize the power of people, organizations, and sectors working together.
The social and economic value of volunteering is a step to improving the lives, not only of others, but our own. The value of volunteering builds confidence, competence, connections and community. Volunteering impacts individual volunteers, neighbourhoods, business, community and organizations alike.
Researcher Caroline Jenkinson at the University of Exeter Medical reviewed studies dealing with volunteering and health outcomes. They found that volunteering has a positive impact on reducing depression and improving life satisfaction and well-being.
Stanford University professor Rachel Casiday conducted research which also finds that volunteering has a positive impact on health. Improvements in issues like mortality, mental health and life satisfaction are positively linked to volunteerism..
The theme of 2021 is a nod to our past, a reflection on our present state, and a wink to our future. It beautifully reflects the individual and collaborative efforts we have seen during the pandemic, and it sets the tone for designing a respectful tomorrow if we acknowledge both, the value of one and the power of many to thrive together.
